Venkatraman Ramakrishnan- The Noble Laureate

A man who is still attached to his roots- Vadodara. He left the place 40 years ago but the city always remained at the back of his mind like a background in a painting.

The Unfortunate riots that took place in Gujarat in 2002 had immensely disturbed him. He joined hands with one of his close associates Professor JS Bandukwala who ran welfare and education programs for Muslim girls who had been affected with the rites. He never forgot the cheques, which he sent for their education.

Humane at heart, he never forgets to inquire about his old servant, who served him..

He is sharing the Nobel Award in Chemistry with Thomas Steitz, an American and Ada Yonath from Israel.

They were given this award for their work on ‘X-ray Crystallography, to pinpoint the positions of atoms which make up ribosomes

Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, Nobel Laureate, said, “It’s gratifying in a way to have one’s work vindicated by what is, after all, the most prestigious award in science. On the other hand it’s important to remember that that’s not why went into science. We went into science out of curiosity, to tackle important problems.”

Congress President Sonia Gandhi congratulated Professor V. Ramakrishnan for his achievement adding that he had done India proud.
