Zachary Christie a six year old, ‘child’, is being treated like a hardened criminal and has been sent to reform school for 45 days.
His Offence? In his excitement he carried a three-in-one camping utensil, which could serve as a knife, fork and spoon in one, to his school. Very excited on joining the Cub Scouts, very pleased with his proud possession.
Offence no. 2? He ‘violated’ his school’s Zero-tolerance policy on weapons.
The sweet little Cub Scout violated the rules! And now he faces suspension!
The school officials are absolutely insensitive. They say they had no choice as, “regardless of possessor’s intent”, he was carrying an object, which was banned.
Zachary is not the only case. There was another case in which a girl brought a cake to school to celebrate her birthday. She was expelled because she was in possession of a knife which she had brought to cut her cake. How Ridiculous!!
But that’s the way it is. The school authorities have their own reasons. What if the child uses the knife to scoop out somebody’s eyes? Who will bear the responsibility?
Rules are made for convenience but if they are followed without common sense, they can become a curse.
New York Times has reported that Zachary’s mother, Debbie Christie and her fiancé are trying to revert his punishment. She is appealing for support through a website ‘helpzachary.com’.
