Sibal’s announce
ment of raising the HSC cut- off from 60% to 80-85% has sparked off a lot of controversy creating a lot of discontent in the cross section of society. The children, who are already stressed out with the pressures of performing, are resenting it because a higher cut-off means greater pressure.
While some academicians have welcomed it majority of them are skeptical.
The principal of Delhi Public School finds it unreasonable as it will further pressurize the kids. A student starts preparing for IIT JEE from class X onwards, with the assurance that his preparation will help him obtain a decent percentage in his boards. But with the increased cut-off, the pressure will be doubled. Besides, anything less than 80% in his boards will also mar his chances of appearing for his IIT, the exams he has been slogging for, the past two years. Not forgetting the fortune that the parents have spent for the preparations.
And what if the student scores in JEE, but fails to acquire 80% in the boards.
Directors of institutes preparing for IIT feel that although only brilliant students qualify in IIT entrance exams, qualifying in their c. They are literally spoonfed which squashes curiosity and the desire to explore, and hinders their flight of thoughts. Besides they have also commercialized education which should be discouraged. Sibal’s move will only propagate it further.
Although the supporters of this move feel that it will improve the standard of education as children who had been neglecting their performance in the boards will strive harder to get better results.
All said and done sibal’s announcement has drawn a lot of flak from all quarters of society.
