Scientific Research has progressively made life much easier and comfortable for all of us. Modern devices have eliminated the hurdles of communication and interaction. One such hurdle is language which has been overcome by ‘Communication Access Real-Time Translation’(CART) which is used in voicewriting.
This software recognizes speech and immediately translates the spoken text into a written text.
NEC has used this technique to make spectacles that can simplify the spoken language by translating it into subtitles. The gadget looks like a pair of specs without lenses. It has a headset with a tiny projector which displays images on the user’s retina. It translates the conversation between two people speaking different languages.
This gadget which is called a Tele Scouter was introduced to help people in sales, interact with customers who spoke different languages. With this aid they could learn the purchase history of their client, which beamed before them, as they conversed.
It can also being used as a translation aid. The microphone on the headset picks up the conversation and with the help of CART, translates it and sends it back to the headset. As the conversation goes on, it is translated and the subtitles are beamed on to the retina, maintaining a smooth conversation.
This gadget can be very useful during confidential talks, where the presence of a translator is more of a hindrance.
Mr. Takayuki Omino the spokesperson of NEC informed that the ‘Tele Scouter’ will be launched in Japan in 2010, without the translation feature. The second version with subtitles will be launched in 2011.
A set of 30 headsets excluding the price of the translation software, will cost around 7.5 yen or 50,000 pounds.
