Pete Newell the great coach has died. Pete Newell coached UC Berkeley and took them to the National Championship in 959 National Collegiate Athletic Assn. basketball and eventually all the way to the title and was one of only three men to guide teams to National Invitation Tournament, NCAA and Olympic championships. Quite a career there.
He died at the grand ripe age of 93. I am not sure about the cause of death but given the age it is quite apparent that he lived large and lived grand and nobody would be too much worried about Pete.
Pete Newell funeral service is still being decided and will be scheduled in the coming days by the family. The details are not clear yet but if you come across them, please post them below for the benefit of other readers.
Hey Pete, rest in peace.

Pete’s passing is very sad to hear. He was a great man and a legend of the sport. George Irvine wrote another great, very personal, tribute on Basketball.org that is also worth the read.
