Cyber Crime On The Increase

Innovative ways of cheating and fraud are becoming more and more sophisticated and rampant with the advance in technology, and cyber crime heads the list.

Fred Touchette, a senior security analyst has informed of yet another scam, where a legitimate looking replica of a popular site has been created and people are being tricked into providing their passwords, thus downloading a virus which can steal their financial data.

The security analyst at AppRiver announced that a notice on the popular ‘facebook’ site has been put up informing people through their mail boxes that their passwords need to be filled in to help them update the log-in system on their site. On clicking the ‘update’ button the user is directed to a fake log in screen on facebook where the user name and password is required to be filled.

One click on the update button and you have passed off all your financial information and personal data to the ‘Zeus bank Trojan’.

6 million e-mails have been captured by AppRiver, realizing that these messages are being received at a rate of 30,000 messages per minute.

The researchers informed that fake ‘Facebook Password Reset Confirmation’ e-mails were being distributed by a botnet, Bredolab. As many as 730,000 Bredolab Related e-mails had been intercepted by Cloudmark, a security provider on Wednesday night.

All the users of Smartphones with Facebook application should be extremely cautious, while accessing such e-mails for protection against such phishing attacks.

Also a tip-off to the Facebook users informing them of no such account update might help.

In case of doubts, the best option is to close the e-mail and access the official site for any notice.
