It was a much awaited moment. The people of Jammu and Kashmir had waited for five long years to witness this. It was an indication that conditions in Kashmir are normal. There was a huge crowd at the Sher-E-Kashmir Stadium waiting for the Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) cricket team to play against the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA).

As the JK team, the officials and the chief minister of Kashmir waited for the Services team on the ground no one turned up. The pullout created a furor!

It was a tip-off that was the culprit! An adverse intelligence probably advised the military to refrain from sending the Services team to Jammu and Kashmir for a Ranji plate division match to be held on Tuesday the 3rd of November.

They were warned of some kind of militant plan to mix with the spectators and create disturbances during the match.

Furious Farooque Abdullah, the Union Minister for new and renewable energy, condemning the services team said, “I will take this up with the government of India. We were all waiting for the Services. We were here to welcome them. It looks very bad that of all teams, Services decided not to come. It shows a very bad image of India.”

.The BCCI immediately banned them from playing any more Ranji Trophy Matches this year.

Although the Services team claims to have tendered an apology to them asking for fresh dates, yet the BCCI secretary N Srinivasan refuses to have received any kind of communication on this issue.

According to him, “The SSCB forfeited the match, having expressed its inability to send its cricket team to Srinagar. The SSCB has therefore been disqualified from participating in the 2009-10 edition of the Ranji Trophy, in accordance with the rules of the BCCI pertaining to Domestic Tournaments.”

Pallam Raju, the State Defense Minister tried to pacify BCCI by saying that the decision had been taken at a lower level, and that they owed an apology to them. They had realized their folly and were now ready to play. But BCCI refused to budge.

“We have taken the decision to disqualify the Services team from playing in this year’s Ranji Trophy. Since the decision has already been taken we will not change it,” reiterated Rajiv Shukla, the BCCI spokesman on Tuesday.

An absolutely infuriated Omar Abdullah the chief minister of J&K criticized the army and said, “Army has made tall claims about its successes in the state against the militant groups. The incident clearly shows the double-standards of the Armed forces operating here.”

‘Grandfather’ Sachin

Of the innumerable accomplishments that Sachin has achieved this one is the rarest of them all. Sachin has become a grandfather…!

…Well! That is what his team mates have nicknamed him

And a grandfather he is-with his experience, with his records, with his achievements, a rare feat which people do not achieve at the age of 36.

It started with Yuvraj, who praised this maestro for his longevity in performance, for his indefatigable zeal, for his insatiable desire for perfection, and for being able to sustain the wears and tears of 20 long years.

“Even at this stage, he wants to improve with every game. For him, there is no end to getting better, no matter whatever you have already achieved. He is an amazing man and I don’t think any other player can go on to play for 20 years or more like he has,” said an overexcited Yuvraj.

His team mates are tired of planning celebrations for him. With every spectacular performance, he has made a new record. With 12777 runs in 159 Test matches, 16953 runs in ODI’s, he holds practically all records in batting since he has been playing from 1989.

And now he is just 47 runs away from breaking his own record.

For him there is no stopping, as there is always room for improvisations.

Sachin collapses in Johannesburg hotel

India Meets Australia at Firoz Shah Kotla

After a comprehensive victory over Australia at Nagpur, the men in blue are all set to go on a rampage at Firoz Shah Kotla today in the 3rd ODI against Australia.

The spate of injuries in the Australian camp has become a cause of great concern for the team. Brett lee’s sore elbow and James hope’s hamstring injury has thrown the entire campaign in a state of complete confusion.

Brett Lee is being flown back to consult specialists as his elbow injury has not responded well to the treatment. So he shall not be able to attend the rest of the ODI’s of the series.

According to Ricky Ponting, as the pitch will be low and slow it will be hard for the batsmen to score runs on the board although the curator Vijay Bahadur Mishra felt that the pitch would be more ‘generous to the batsmen,’ if they play with a straight bat.

As for the top order on the Indian side the best is yet to come. Harbhajan Singh has not been able to perform according to his capabilities which can be a cause of worry for skipper Dhoni as the pitch at Firoz Shah Kotla is best suited for spinners.

With the series tied at 1-1, the stage has been set for a pitched battle.

The Punch That Cost-A Million Pounds

Marlon Francis King, the Jamaican professional football player is once again in thick soup. His uncouth acts have often kept him at the helm of controversies. They somehow go hand in hand with him. Since 1997 he has been convicted for 14 offences, and he has got away with a few months in jail and some hundred pounds. But this time it has costhim a ‘million pound contract’.

He has been sacked by the Wigan Athletic after he sexually assaulted a 20 year old university student in a London nightclub. Marlon king was out there for a dual celebration. His wife’s pregnancy and a 2-1 victory over Middlesbrough.

On seeing the girl he made sexual advances at her, but when she spurned him and tried pushing him back, he caught her and smashed her face on the ground violently, instantly breaking her nose. This brutal assault has been severely criticized and he has been sentenced 18 months of imprisonment.

Dave Whelan, the chairman said, “Young people look up to professional footballers and we must have standards. At Wigan we’re mad keen on setting standards and our players, generally, are absolutely brilliant. He is absolutely sacked – we will not tolerate football players who get sent to jail for 18 months. As far as we are concerned, he is finished with football at Wigan Athletic.”

His agent Tony Finnegan reported that King would try and convince the Premier League that it was a case of mistaken identity and that Wigan Athletics should reconsider their decision.

There is a long list of offences associated with him since 1997. Offences ranging from assaulting women, using abusive language against them, misbehaving with them, slapping on their bottoms and even spitting on their faces to, frauds, theft and drunken driving.

India vs. Australia- A Series to Watch

Ricky Ponting has arrived with his squad to play the seven-match one-day International series between India and Australia

The first match will be played at Vadodara on October 25, 2009, while the last one will be held at the Brabourne Stadium on the 11th of November.

India which had crashed out at the League stage is all set to prove it’s mettle, while Australia is confident after a thrashing, 6-1 victory over England and winning the Champions Trophy one-day tournament held in South Africa, earlier this month.

The Australian team has embarked on this tour with some uncertainties. Michael Clarke is suffering from a strained back which delayed his arrival with the team.

A serious knee-injury has caused Ferguson to be sidelined. Shaun Marsh, the former Australian opener is back after a hamstring injury.

With the batting lineup disrupted, Ricky Ponting will have to do a bit of thinking along with the selectors.

Although Ponting is confident and all geared up to take on India in the ensuing series.

The series schedule is as follows-

Argentina Qualifies for World Cup Finals

Argentina finally managed to secure a place for themselves in the finals to be held in South Africa next year.

It was a turbulent match in which they defeated their neighbors Uruguay by 1-0 on Wednesday. Mario Bollati’s strike in the 85th minute confirmed the fourth place for Argentina which had been in doldrums under Maradona’s leadership.

After Argentina became the fourth team to qualify for the finals, Maradona wept, hugging his coaching staff and hurling insults at the media.

So Brazil, Chile and Paraguay are the four teams which will represent South America for the finals to be held in South Africa next year.

Uruguay which was the team to end fifth in the South American group of ten teams will have another opportunity via a two legged playoff with Costa Rica. The playoff dates to qualify for the World Cup, are 14th and 18th of November..

Ecuador had great chances of qualifying on Wednesday, but a 1-0 defeat by Chile quashed their hopes. Humberto Suazo’s goal left them in the 6th position with 23 points, just 1 point behind Uruguay.

Brazil topped the group with 34 points. But the last match with Venezuela in Campo Grande, lacked the usual luster as it ended in a draw without any goals.

Paraguay scored 33 points. They lost 2-0 to Colombia. Gustavo Ramos and Rodallega

scored during the last half hour. They ranked third after Chile on goal difference.

While Argentina was fourth with 28 points. Had they lost to Uruguay coupled with a

win with Ecuador, Argentina would have missed a chance of qualifying for the

finals, for the first time since 1970 .

The playoff draw will be held at FIFA Headquarters on Monday the 19th of October. The participating teams will be seeded by football ranking, the results of which will be announced on the 16th of October.

World Cup 2011 Final at Mumbai!

The venues for the much awaited World Cup 2011 have finally been announced. Mumbai gets it share of finals while Mohali gets a semi-final.

Mumbai will host 2 more matches besides the final, at the Wankhede stadium specially being renovated for the occasion.

India’s share of quarter-final will be held at Ahmedabad with two more matches.

New Delhi, Nagpur, Bangalore and Kolkata will have four matches each including one India game in all the four cities.

The inaugural ceremony will be held at Bangladesh on the 18th of February. Two quarter-finals are scheduled to be held here, while Sri Lanka will host a semi-final and a quarter-final.

The Indian Cricket Board announced that India will organize 29 matches to be held at eight venues, while Sri Lanka will hold 12 and Bangladesh the rest of the 20 matches in the 49 matches’ tournament during the World cup 2011 to be held in February- March.

The details of the 14- nation tournament will be announced on the 9th of November.

There will be two groups of seven teams each, with four teams from each group qualifying for the quarter-finals.

Group A—Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Canada and Kenya.

Group B—India, South Africa, West Indies, England, Bangladesh, Ireland and Netherlands.

The distribution of the matches is as follows-

Mumbai—— Final + 2 matches

Mohali ——-Semi-final +2 matches

Ahmedabad—Quarter- final + 2 matches.

New Delhi, Bangalore, Nagpur, Chennai, and Kolkata will hold 4 matches, 1 each with the home team.

Younus Khan’s Resignation

Soon after the accusation of deliberately losing to Australia, in the ICC Champions Trophy, Younus Khan attended a meeting to discuss the team’s performance.

As a protest he decided to resign as captain. He was shocked and dismayed by being summoned by the Pakistan National Assembly’s committee on sports.

The team according to him had been performing consistently in the past few matches. Charges of match-fixing were least expected at this time. But Jamshed Dasti’s allegations that ‘they had deliberately lost the match against Australia to throw arch-rivals India out of the Champions Trophy’, appalled him.

A t the meeting he said, “I tender my resignation and if captains are summoned like this, no one will be eager to lead the Pakistan team. I have resigned as a captain; I won’t say a word more.”

Ijaz Butt, the chairman of the PCB refused his resignation saying that “It’s an emotional decision and I reject it.”

While clearing his stand, Younus also added that he had played in spite of an injured finger. Intikhab Alam, the coach said that Younus had taken an impulsive decision on being emotionally hurt and disturbed.

Former Captain Ramiz Raja condemned the lawmaker’s meeting saying, “Politicians have nothing to do with cricket. With this meeting the committee has not only deprived us of a good captain but also damaged the game which is the only entertainment in Pakistan.”

Latif criticized Dasti saying, “It’s shameful that anyone can come up with allegations without any proof and that the media relay it without authentication — Younus is an honorable man, so he has resigned.”

As of now all allegations have been withdrawn, as they could not be proved.
