The last week the biggest at the American Idol was not the actual elimination but the people who were lined up combating elimination came as a surprise. Adam Lambert who was almost crowned as the American Idol by the viewers as well as the judges was ironically standing along the bottom three.

Eventually Matt Giraud was ousted. It was surprising to see Adam Lambert instead of Allison Iraheta who is the least popular finalists. However, looking at the history of American Idol, the unexpected should be the expected one, as clearly the last week history repeated itself.

American Idol has shown inclination towards the once who have been growing rather than the once being on the peak early. It’s quite clear that one has to show improvement in order to be out there or else elimination is the way out.

If you look at this the strength of a good participant is really used against him. A strong contender for the position, who starts strong, doesn’t have the room for improvement for the baseline he/she is already on as compared to the mediocre finalists. The mediocre finalists are able to impress the judges and steal the hearts of the viewers by showing improvement. But the fact remains that improving at the stage the Matt Giraud is not that easy. It takes time and is a gradual process to cross the lines from being good to excellent or even going a step forward from excellent. Some thing similar happened for Lil, as the improvement she showed was tremendous but then the pace was high she peaked early and so she had to go.

The same was seen in the first season of American Idol as well with Tamyra Gray getting eliminated. Since then Jennifer Hudson, Melinda Doolittle, Chris Daughtry and Michael Johns are the other front runners who bid goodbye early. The Judge Save Rule was included in the American Idol for the current season but wasn’t used to avoid the shocking elimination.

Where as the hopes for Adam Lambert aren’t lost just because of one week of being at the bottom at the same time being the best doesn’t mean that a contender is christened as an “American Idol”.

There are numerous factors balancing the equation of the American Idol winner. The votes would prove to be very decisive. Viewers don’t always want to see the strongest and the best singer as their “American Idol”. The popularity of the contesters contributes a great deal. Who the viewers chose as their next American Idol amongst the two finalists – Danny Gokey and Adam Lambert, would be an interesting watch.
