Stephen Patrick David Gately is no more. It just can’t sink in. This young Irish pop singer, writer and actor, one of the two lead singers of the band Boyzone, breathed his last in his sleep on the 10th of October.

The news has come as a great shock to millions of his fans and friends.

He was in Majorca on a holiday with his lone partner Andy Cowles, whom he had married in London in 2006, in a civil Union.

Gately is believed to have been out for a few drinks. He came back. He slept. And never woke up again. The news of his demise has left Louis Walsh, Boyzone’s manager, devastated. He had met him just a week ago on an award function.

The other members of the band are distraught. No one could ever imagine such a thing would happen. Ronan Keating, the other lead singer of the band was very close to him. “He was like a brother to me”, said Ronan who has been shattered by the loss of his friend.

The other members of Boyzone – Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Shane Lynch and Mikey Graham – will be flying to Palma, Majorca tomorrow.

Boyzone was formed in 1993. Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Shane Lynch and Mikey Graham, were the other members of the band. Gately and Ronan were the two lead singers in most of the songs.

All their albums hit no one in UK. The third album was a roaring success internationally. Kately’s ‘Key to my life’, and ‘Love me for a reason’… made him a sensation in the world of pop music.

To the utter dismay of Boyzone fans the band broke up in 2000. Gately than released his Top 10 solo album. He joined the band once again in 2008, for a series of recordings and concerts.

Their comeback tour was announced last November.
